Maintenance

How often should my system be serviced?

Ideally twice a year: the cooling system in spring and the heating system in fall. At the very least, once a year before the season it works hardest.

Maintenance & Comfort Plans
How often should I change my filter?

Check it every month. A good rhythm here is monthly from May to September and every other month the rest of the year, and more often during wildfire smoke, after Santa Ana winds, or if you have pets.

Is there anything I can do myself?

Yes: change filters, keep the outdoor unit clear, keep vents open and watch for water near the indoor unit.

Repair and replacement

How long does a system last?

With good care, air conditioners and heat pumps typically last around 12 to 15 years, sometimes less near the coast. Gas furnaces often last 15 to 20 years or more.

Should I repair or replace?

It depends on the system's age, its running costs, its refrigerant and whether there is any safety issue. We will always give you an honest recommendation.

Repair or replace?
What size system do I need?

That comes from a room-by-room load calculation of your home, not from the size of the old unit. A system that is too large is as much of a problem as one that is too small.

Choosing the right system
Do I need a permit to replace my system?

Yes. In California, replacing heating or cooling equipment requires a permit, and in most cases the ducts must be tested for leakage and the installation verified by an independent rater. We take care of it.

My system uses R-22 or R-410A. Is that a problem?

You can keep using and repairing an existing system. R-22 is no longer produced, so refrigerant repairs on those systems are expensive. R-410A is still serviced, but supply is being reduced.

Comfort, air and savings

Is a heat pump a good choice in Southern California?

Often, yes. Our mild winters suit heat pumps well, and one system handles both heating and cooling. We will compare running costs for your home honestly.

Heat Pumps & Ductless
Can you help with indoor air quality?

Yes. Filtration, humidity control, fresh-air ventilation and clean, well-sealed ducts all play a part.

Healthy Air
Can you help me find rebates?

Yes. Programs change often, so we check what is available for your address when we prepare your quote. Note that the federal tax credit for heat pumps and high-efficiency equipment ended for installations after December 31, 2025.
